Charmed, I'm Sure!

Fans of prep, have you been to Charming Charlie?  I was introduced to it by my mom several years ago in RVA, and I am pleased to report that the chain now has several stores in MA. 

It is color coordinated, which is perfect for picking out that one thing (or five) that you need for an outfit.  And everything is under $50, with constant sales and coupons.  Among my faves are the necklace and earring sets- usually for a total of $13-18!

March- reset!

Happy march, fans of preppy and others.

Apologies for the radio silence, but, overall, February kicked my butt.  I have decided with the exception of the birthday of my fabulous dad, I really don't like the month at all.  It is usually cold and snowy (although not snowy this year in MA).  Work was horrendously slow, which is terrible if you are in sales.  I am not a fan of Valentines Day, which has nothing to do with my relationship status (for the record, I have been with the bf for almost 3.5 years).  I ended the month feeling let down, and I started this one off not much better, with a disappointing number on the scale and a lost phone.

But my phone was found (thank you, Iphone locator!) and I realized that, jeez, if a lost phone that I am to attached and a number and a number on a scale that doesn't reflect how much I have toned up are the worst things in my life, I am a pretty lucky person.  And this month, next month and beyond are filling up with some exciting things!  

And preppy is always on my mind!

I took the time to connect and to focus on some things from my resolutions list.  I saw my family all together, which is a rare treat.  

I got some QT friend time- often times over a meal...

 I have been working on getting healthy with my eating habits and my workout schedule.  I have been working on learning to code (so cool!).  And, I made a terrarium, finally!!  

And, perhaps more importantly to me, I have been working on growing my Facebook group, Massachusetts Senior and Special Needs Animals in Search of Forever Homes, to find homes for senior and special needs animals.  It's a never ending mission, and, there aren't enough good people out there to save the abandoned animals.

This is Tom Applehead.  He was alone, abandoned on the streets for at least five years.  He was rescued by a wonderful person at Boston's Forgotten Felines when she saw that he was having trouble eating.  He's at least ten, no has no teeth and is FIV+.  I loved him before he became my foster.  He was supposed to stay 3 weeks.  That was at the beginning of September. ;)

Tonight, my friend from the rescue world lost his cat unexpectedly.  My heart is broken for him.  Never take advantage of the time that you have with someone or something.  You don't have forever.

Spring is coming (I think that Massachusetts is going to have a spring this year)!  And I have a ton of preppy posts in the making.

Retail - Swan Song?

Early last month, I received news that Bloomingdales was eliminating my position of "contingent" from its stores nationwide.  I was sad to hear this, and the HR department was sad to inform me of it.  

I have been a Bloomies employee for almost 11 years, and I have met some amazing friends through my time there.  Some of the people that I met are still there, but most have left.  Some had babies, some retired, some went to other retail jobs or careers and a bunch got laid off.

Retail has been good to me, aside from encouraging my shopping addiction.  I got my first retail job when I was newly married and totally lost as to what to do with my career.  It was a great way to earn a living, and then to supplement my income when I found my career.  When I was laid off 6 years ago, Bloomies let me pick up as many shifts as I could while collecting unemployment.  

I have met lifelong friends through retail.  At my first retail job (at Calypso on Newbury Street), I met a great friend who I look forward to starting an online business with later this year.  At my second retail job at In The Pink, I amassed a killer Lilly Pulitzer Collection that I hope to pass on to a younger generation.  And at Bloomingdales, I met so many cool people from all walks of life who helped me put so many things into perspective over the last decade.

I am a relationship person- my relationships usually last a long time.  I will miss my job at Bloomies.  I loved coming to the store and seeing what was new in each department.   I still think that Bloomingdales is one of the nicest department stores in the country.

I have scored some legendary deals, of course.  A Chanel classic quilted bag for my 30th.  A Burberry trench.  A Marc Jacobs bag.  Tons and tons of preppy staples, including building my Lilly wardrobe.  Kelly green Tory Burch Reva flats.  A pink and green David Yurman ring.

My balance is paid off in full, and I will miss my employee discount.  But I have a well stocked closet and I need to invest in my house and in building my side business with my first retail friend.

I would be happy to come back if the store changes its mind.  I hope that they do.  I think that they will.  But I doubt that I will get another retail job, if not.  I had a lot of seniority and the managers were very flexible, as I was a long termer and would work wherever they needed someone and I never required any training.  I have no desire to start at the bottom being low man on the totem pole and training with people 20 years younger than me.  Sorry, it's just not the same.

Retail, I'll miss you.  Retail friends, I will miss you, but I hope to stay in touch with many of you.  Discount, I'll miss you terribly.  Credit card bill, I will not miss you!
